Where Trouble
Can’t Hurt You!

Friend, I sincerely believe that most of us would agree that the sorrow, suffering, loss, and stresses of life that each of us experiences can cause some of us to feel as though we are involved in a daily struggle to survive. The troubles you are experiencing in your life right now may be because of a health problem, a financial setback, a problem with your family, a neighbour’s problem, the loss of a loved one, or some other challenge.
Most of us cross our bridges before we get to them. We mentally create all sorts of obstacles; we conjure up a lot of ghosts. Fear can be seriously overplayed. It can be exaggerated until the fear of evil is worse than the evil itself. A person’s fear of illness is often much worse than the illness itself. And the fear of failure may be worse than actual failure!
There are so many faceless phobias, such as fear of high places, fear of low places, fear of being closed in, fear of being in the open spaces, fear of old age, and fear of death. There is even phobia-phobia. Fear of fear!
However, some of the troubles we face, in the long run, turn out to be assets and a source of strength! That is, if we have learned to confront them with faith and resourcefulness, rather than doubt and resentment.

Friend, Jeanne Francis has great faith! That’s why she could smile as she was rolled into the operating room. It was a genuine, calm smile. There was nothing fake about it! She knew the danger facing her. There was every possibility that she wouldn’t come out of that operating room alive. You see, she had a very large tumour, deeply embedded in her brain.
Have you ever wished for that kind of inner calm? Most of us fall apart under much less critical circumstances. What makes the difference? You, too, can face life or death with Jeanne’s calm confidence when you get close to God; when you can say, “I will fear no evil, for you are with me.” That comforting phrase comes from the Centre of Psalm 23, the best-known chapter in the Bible. It has been used more than any other chapter to bring comfort, hope, and build faith.
The writer of Psalm 23 did not say, “I will meet no evil.” He said, “I will fear no evil.” Each of us will indeed meet evil during our lifetime. David did! Jeanne did! I will! You will! However, when we can grasp the kind faith which says, “I will fear no evil, for You are with me,” we will be at the place where trouble can’t hurt us!
