Friend, for as long as human history has been recorded, every age has seemed to unfold with greater drama.  It is certainly true of our time.  We’ve eradicated polio and smallpox, transplanted human hearts, and developed artificial hearts.  Our athletes have broken world records in unprecedented numbers.  We’ve walked on the moon.  We’ve made advances in the arts, sciences, medicine, and every human endeavour! --- Almost!

With all our talent, information, and ingenuity, you would think we would have eliminated disease, hunger, injustice, loneliness, anxiety, depression, hatred, violence, crime, political struggle, and fear, but we haven’t!

TELL ME WHY?

In a play by Pinero, the tragic story of Paula is told. Her past was sordid and sinful.  But eventually, a man came into her life — handsome, wealthy, and personable.  Despite Paula’s past, he fell in love with her and asked her to marry him.

They talked about how they would manage when problems surfaced from the past.  They faced up to the fact that there would be difficulties.  But their love for each other was deep, and believing that, somehow, love would find a way, they decided to marry.  Unfortunately, the marriage didn’t work out, and Paula took her own life.  Just before her death, she spoke the theme line of the play, “Tomorrow is but yesterday entered through another door.”

Sadly, too many people have decided life is set on an inevitable course of doom, believing that things aren’t going to get any better and that tomorrow will bring more of the miserable same!

However, Friend, is that true?   Is “tomorrow but yesterday entered through another door”?    Do our mistakes and disappointments always hang around to haunt us?  Is there no escape from our weaknesses and inadequacies?

Does this mean we should give up on these things?  No, it means we must learn how to live in such a world.  We must pledge ourselves anew to live with the trouble that surrounds us in a realistic, hopeful way.

Some of our troubles are quite manageable.  Especially if we are willing to place our faith and trust in Jesus, who came into this broken and battered world that we might have real and eternal life, more and better life than we have ever dreamed of (John 10:10).

Yes! Through committing our lives to Jesus, our troubles can be conquered!  We overcome their power to hurt us when we overcome our fear of them. Your life can be changed.  It can be different.  The future doesn’t have to be like the past.  Tomorrow can be better!”

Insurance companies make millions of dollars gambling on the fact that the disasters people fear will never occur.  These companies win more often than they lose.  That’s the only way they can stay in business.

Most of us cross our bridges before we get to them.  We mentally create all sorts of obstacles; we conjure up a lot of ghosts.  Fear can be seriously overplayed.  It can be exaggerated until the fear of evil is worse than the evil itself.  A person’s fear of illness is often worse than the illness!  The fear of failure may be worse than actual failure.

There are so many faceless phobias . . . fear of high places, fear of low places, fear of being closed in, fear of being in the open spaces, fear of old age, fear of death.  There is even phobia-phobia, fear of fear!

Some of the troubles you are possibly experiencing in your life, maybe because of a health problem, a financial setback, a problem with your family, a neighbour problem, the loss of a loved one, or some other challenge, such as the fear of contracting the COVID-19 virus or one of its variants, Delta, or Omicron.

Friend, if you are struggling with one or more of those problems I have just referred to, and you would like to find yourself in a place where trouble can’t hurt you, we invite you to write for our FREE booklets titled TOMORROW CAN BE BETTER!” and WHERE TROUBLE CAN’T HURT YOU.”
