Today's Message
THE LIGHT
THAT NEVER
SHINES!
Friends, just over fifty years ago, as a minister with the City Beach Church of Christ, I was privileged to teach Bible classes at the West Leederville and Floreat Park Primary Schools in Perth, Western Australia.
It was during this time that I came across a poem in one of the School Newsletters, written by a 12-year-old girl, which touched my heart deeply!
As I read her poem, I was impressed by the maturity of this young 12-year-old girl's amazing insight into the stark reality of life, which was then, (just as it is today), filled with shallowness and superficiality, which has caused many people to struggle to escape from a sense of hopelessness, loneliness and the darkness of depression, of helplessness, confusion, harassment, bewilderment, and not knowing which way to turn.
The following words are from the pen of the 12-year-old student mentioned above. I have added the graphics to highlight her genuine struggle with the world she was living in.
"THE LIGHT
THAT NEVER SHINES!"
"Let me off, I must be free!
way from the organised, rat-race of time!
I’m caught on a merry-go-round of falsities.
Deception and deceit are a way of life!
Sincerity and consideration are somehow forgotten.
Money is now the main objective.
I long for open spaces and free air
Away from the maze of cluttered minds.
Away from hard sell and exaggeration!
Myriads of sights are polluting our scenery,
Distorting value and truth!
But isn’t truth worth more than money?
I’m lost in a labyrinth of sales and specials.
Bargains crammed down my throat—choking me!
We’re destroying and decaying our world.
Polluting land, sea, and our own minds!
The disease, like greed for money,
is eating our COMPASSION!
Somehow, someway, somewhere,
there must be a LIGHT!"
Personally, during my ministry of almost 60 years, I have witnessed the emotional, physical, and mental carnage that such feelings in human beings can lead to.
Sadly, during my years of ministry, I have been called upon to conduct funeral services for numerous men and women who have committed suicide, by gassing, overdosing on drugs, hanging, or shooting themselves

JESUS IS
"THE LIGHT THAT SHINES!"
Friends, history attests that Jesus came at just the right time. In the age of the Romans, blood was shed at events for the sheer purpose of amusement.
Throughout the empire, infants were being killed for convenience, and children were shamelessly sold as slaves. Suicide was considered permissible, legal, and often advisable.
Will Durant, in his book, The Story of Civilisation, Volume III, wrote the following words concerning the transforming impact Jesus Christ had on people during His lifetime on this earth:
"In Rome's failures, people turned from Caesar preaching war to Jesus Christ preaching peace, from incredible brutality to unprecedented charity, from life without hope or dignity to a faith that consoled their poverty and honoured their humanity" (p. 667).
"Caesar and Christ met in the arena and Christ won!" (p. 652).
Friends, Jesus gave life meaning through His extraordinary teachings, which were contradictory to their culture and He personally called people from all walks of life to follow Him on His terms. In time, His supreme example would triumph in the world through His disciples.
When Christianity first spread in the ancient world, the Christians never found a culture that was not looking for a Saviour. – In fact, this is why Christianity will not go away! – It is an axiomatic truth that Jesus, the Nazarene, and Jesus only, can fulfil the longings of the human spirit.
He does this by His compassionate example, and through His teachings during His life on earth, and ultimately through His sacrificial death on the cross of Calvary and subsequently through His resurrection from the tomb into which His dead body had been laid!
In doing this, Jesus demonstrated that He is the way into the presence of our Heavenly Father! – He makes available to us a wholeness of life, where we can experience inner peace, regardless of what outward circumstances may exist.
"Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one's life for his friends" (John 15:13-14).
Jesus is the person sent by God, who willingly came to provide humanity with the WHOLENESS and SECURITY OF LIFE that each of us inwardly is seeking.
